Good Morning Coaches!
 
I have compiled the report for the survey that almost 500 of you completed for us concerning your thoughts on the mercy rules for softball  in district and playoff games. I've attached the report in pdf format to this email. Sorry, but it is quite lengthy, but I did break down the votes and percentages by conference, region, and by conference/region.

I also added the list that includes the mercy rules for almost each district in our state for comparison. 

Finally, I did this for UIL schools only as I went back and looked at the TAPPS by-laws and the 10 after 5 plus 15 after 3 mercy rules are already in effect for non-district, district, and playoff games (section 175, II, C, 1-2), but I think that when I was at St. Agnes Academy and played a UIL school, we as coaches mutally agreed upon the mercy rules. 

My quick observation is that a large majority favor the requirement of a 15 after 3 mercy rule in district play, a small majority favor the mandatory 15 after 3 rule in the playoffs, and somewhere in the middle of the majorities, favor the 15 after 3 rule being optional in the playoffs. To me, if there is no mandatory rule across the state for 15 after 3 in district play, it shouldn't be mandatory in the playoffs. After that, I'm pretty neutral and I'll support what our coaches want. 

I will compile the report on the coaches association surveys next week, and I believe the next question will be a 5A/6A question on mandatory 2 out of 3 series in the playoffs as baseball will pilot in 2024. I know that question has come up already as well.

This invitation is for High School Head Softball Coaches only.  Bring your Varsity and JV to play in this Preseason Event. It's a jump on UIL practice which starts Friday, January 13, 2023. One Coach that sent his Team every year for 9 years says it really helped his team get ready for the upcoming season.  
Absolutely, No select teams will be allowed to play in this Event.
This High School Warm Up will be Directed by LGSA President William Peoples.  Jim Campbell will be assisting William.

The Longview Girls Softball Association (LGSA) will host the 13TH ANNUAL LGSA ARK-LA-TEX HIGH SCHOOL WARM UP - 2023 Tournament on January 7 & 8, 2023.  These dates are on the weekend just prior to Friday, January 13, 2023 (First day for Texas UIL School Practice).  Enter your High School Team in this Tourney, have a volunteer coach the Team and you come watch them play.  We have a 40-team limit with a waiting list.           
 
The Tournament will be held at Lear Park, 100 H. G. Moseley Parkway, Longview, TX on 8 Fields.  Come play with us.  It's good practice for the upcoming 2023 Season. Below is information on the Event:

13TH ANNUAL LGSA ARK-LA-TEX HIGH SCHOOL WARM UP - 2023
 
1.  January 7 & 8, 2023

2.  Hosted by LGSA at Lear Park, 100 H. G. Moseley Parkway, Longview, TX.

3.  High School Teams Only !!  JVs (4A,5A&6A) teams will play in the Small School Division.  No Select Teams !!

4.  Two Divisions - Large School (4A-5A-6A) and Small School (2A-3A-4A-JV).    

5.  Total Entry Fee - $200 (No Pay at Plate Fees).  Pay cash at the Event.  

6.  4 Game Guarantee (2 Pool, Double Elimination Bracket,  Blind Draw at Check-In).

7.  Teams Furnish Game Balls.

8.  Register your High School Team by the Head Coach (Only) calling me, Jim Campbell at 903-240-4125 (C).
 
After you call me and tell me your Team will play in the event, copy both of us in an email with the below info.

9.  Pay Entry Fee ($200 per Team) at Tournament Check-In that Saturday, January 7.

10.  Gate Fees - $5 Daily, ( Age 7 and under free). 

11.  Firm Registration Deadline is Wednesday, December 14 , 2022.  Registration will stop at 40 Teams.

Waiting list after 40 Teams and we have used the list to add and stay at 40 if someone drops out.

The periodic emails that Coach Hicks sends out to all of the head coaches on his email distribution list (Coaches Directory) are now available to view from this site. To access the past emails, please go the the menu item above "Coaches Emails" of use this link (https://txprepsoftball.net/index.php/coaches-emails).  Coaches do not need to be subscribers to be able to receive and access the emails. 

Twenty years ago, coaches started asking Coach Hicks, who was chairperson of the TGCA Softball Committee at the time, if he knew of any schools looking for games on certain dates. Hicks emailed everyone on the committees if they had openings and they sent him theirs and he started sending these out to the committee. The committee members started emailing their coaching contacts and they would email Coach Hicks with their openings. Before long, this became a daily email from Coach Hicks as the email list started growing exponentially from 25 to 100 to 200 and more to the point that the list was over 750 coaches. 

Coach Hicks would cut and paste all of the open date requests to a daily email which he would put together and send out early each morning before he left for his morning bus route. A couple of coaches suggested that Coach Hicks start a website where he could post all of the openings and that is where Texas Prep Softball began. The site began as a place for coaches to get their open dates posted, but also where news and updates could be found, and eventually records, standings, directories, scores, and even a forum page (for a couple of years) were available and now comprise the current website. 

The site and emails we're always funded by Coach Hicks until when he decided to retire from education as an assistant principal at A&M Consolidated HS in 2015. Coaches asked Coach Hicks to continue the site and wanted to contribute to keeping the site online and help him for the time that he took to keep the site running. Quite a few numbers were suggested to Hicks on how much to charge, but he felt that $10 per year would help him be able to pay for the server spaces and support and take care of the time that he took to maintain and add to the site. 

While the subscription fee gives coaches access to the Open Dates / Open Scrimmages / Open Tournaments pages and Coaches Directory, the rest of the site and the periodic emails are provided to the coaches and public free of charge as Coach Hicks wants this site to continue to provide news, updates, and a place for Texas HS softball coaches, players, and fans to be able to come to get information and exchange ideas / network with each other. 

Hopefully the site helps everyone in their support of our great sport and is a resource that all of our softball coaches, players, and fans can use.
